Digging more deeply: Climate investigations in EaP countries

Program for journalists from EaP countries and European Union to produce investigative or solutions journalism pieces on climate change topics (energy independence, forests, green transition, climate justice). Project is made possible with the support of Journalismfund Europe's Earth investigations programme.

Project Summary

The n-ost project “Digging more deeply: Climate investigations in EaP countries” strengthened investigative climate journalism in the Eastern Partnership region by bringing together reporters from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine with colleagues from EU countries and supporting them through training, mentoring, and publication opportunities. It enabled participating journalists to improve their skills in handling climate-related data and developing investigative story angles connected to major regional issues such as energy and independence, forests, climate justice, and the green transition. The project culminated in a workshop held in Moldova and a publication call, through which 16 journalists were selected (11 from EaP countries and 5 from EU countries), helping to build a cross-border professional network and generate climate investigations with stronger depth and relevance for audiences in the region.

The program will equip journalists with essential tools to conduct investigations in countries where access to data and resources is limited and provide them with insights into challenges and solutions on the way to a climate-friendly and safe energy sector.

It includes a workshop in Moldova for 15 participants (2 from each EaP country and 3 from EU) and a publication call.

16 participants were selected to participate in offline Workshop and Publication call:

  • 5 participants from EU countries

  • 11 participants from EaP countries (from all EaP countries)

Representing Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, and neighboring European countries, these reporters collaborated to explore pressing environmental issues, strengthen investigative skills, and develop story ideas that shed light on climate challenges across the region.

Following the Workshop, a publication call was opened exclusively for Workshop participants.
An internal jury was formed to review the submissions, and  8 publication proposals were selected (2 cross-boarder team projects and 4 individual projects).
