Despite the ongoing Russian aggression, Ukraine has adopted a number of climate-related strategies, reforms, and green initiatives in recent years. These efforts are increasingly supported by international partners. Under the umbrella of Green Recovery Ukraine, multiple global funding programmes aim to contribute to a climate-friendly reconstruction of the country. For instance, the German government has already committed around 30 million euros for Ukraine’s green transformation.
To make the complex processes of climate adaptation, energy transition, and environmental recovery more visible and accessible to the public, n-ost has launched a one-year project supporting 10 Ukrainian journalists in producing high-quality, engaging climate coverage.
Over 12 months, these journalists will create at least 40 original materials exploring topics such as:
climate change and adaptation,
the shift to renewable energy,
energy resilience in wartime and post-war conditions,
the role of local initiatives and communities in green recovery.
The journalists will work in a variety of formats — analysis, feature stories, explainers, and human-centered reporting — using the approach of solutions journalism to not only highlight challenges, but also explore how people and communities are addressing them in Ukraine.
All produced materials will be offered to Ukrainian media outlets through a syndication model. This means that any media platform can either re-publish the stories in full or adapt selected parts to suit local contexts and formats. This format is especially useful for regional media, which often lack time and resources for in-depth environmental reporting.
By strengthening climate journalism and supporting collaboration among Ukrainian media, the project contributes to an informed, constructive public dialogue about how Ukraine can rebuild sustainably — and fairly.
This project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy under the International Climate Initiative (IKI), co-financed by the European Union and supported by the Ukrainian Climate Office and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
