Digging More Deeply Workshop: Climate Investigations in Eastern Partnership Countries

Published on Sep 22, 2025

In early September, a group of investigative journalists from the Eastern Partnership region and neighboring European states gathered in Chișinău, Moldova for a workshop on climate investigations. Workshop is made possible with the support of Journalismfund Europe's Earth investigations programme.

The training provided a hands-on exchange on climate journalism, data-driven reporting, and cross-border cooperation. Participants emphasized how valuable it was to learn practical skills without being overwhelmed:

I needed someone to help me get what I need to learn about data and work with. The training was not overwhelming – it’s good – and I got very practical tips, which is even better.

Alongside lectures and networking, the group visited several Moldovan NGOs and institutions to better understand local climate challenges and solutions:

  • Eco-TIRAS International Environmental Association of River Keepers – for insights into regional water management and the Dniester River’s significance.
  • EcoContact Office – to discuss Moldova’s green transition and the role of journalism in holding decision-makers accountable. More on the meeting here (in Romanian).
  • Ecovisio – where rural issues and sustainable development in Moldovan communities were in focus.

Participants shared their reflections:

I learned about the Moldovan climate situation and efforts done there, which could be useful for Armenian experience too. In particular, water shortages in southern Moldova resonate with challenges in Armenia.

I gained a much deeper understanding of the climate change situation in Moldova. Importantly, I saw Ukraine’s role in these processes – after all, my country has a significant impact on Moldova’s largest source of water, the Dniester River. Thanks to the training, I was able to establish more than 10 new contacts in Moldova – experts, government officials, and journalists. Now we are even planning joint projects.

Beyond skills and knowledge, participants networked a lot, including Earth Investigations networking event, organized by n-ost and Journalismfund Europe on 8th September, an informal gathering that provided Moldovan journalists space to exchange experiences and find potential partners for environmental investigations. Journalists highlighted the value of networking

I liked networking, listening to other people's ideas and interests. The networking aspect was great – as always! I'm looking forward to many inspiring cross-border cooperations.

The workshop in Chisinuu proved once again that collaborative, cross-border journalism is crucial to addressing climate change challenges. Participants left with new knowledge, fresh perspectives, and concrete plans for joint investigations. Till 23rd September they can apply for financial support of their investigative stories.
