kitchen talk goes picnic: Does cross-border journalistic collaboration contribute to a European public sphere (or not)?

Join us for a talk and drink and a peek into the media kitchen: Each month we invite journalists, experts and their audiences to take a seat at our table for conversations on journalism and its impact. This July, we take our conversation outdoors to take stock of how journalistic collaboration contributes to a common European public sphere.

Background and context

Countries across Europe are grappling with strikingly similar challenges including democratic backsliding and media polarization to climate change, migration, and the spread of disinformation. While national contexts differ, there is potential – and a need for – mutual learning and collaboration. But for that to happen, we need spaces that enable open, cross-border dialogue. Creating a space that reflects a truly European perspective requires us to bring together a wide range of voices, experiences, and viewpoints. A European public sphere that fosters engagement, exchange, and collaboration doesn’t just emerge on its own, it must be actively shaped through transnational efforts and shared reflection.

What approaches have been taken so far to contribute to the development of a European public sphere? Where have we made progress, and what challenges remain? And what are we still missing in order to bring this idea to life?
