Media conference 2017: Inside our Blind Spots

A report starts with a realisation that we do not know something, but want to find out. It is not always easy to realise what is missing – sometimes one needs a change of optics to see the new stories.

For the thirteenth n-ost media conference, we decided to focus our attention on the blind spots we all have. Blind spots in all senses – the topics and angles that have been left uncovered and the audiences that were ignored. We spent the three days reflecting on what is left outside our view and what are the consequences of this exclusion. Ukraine, the country that has – for too long – stayed outside the view of many Western journalists has been the perfect spot to discuss such problems.

What we report and what we don't see?

What are the consequences of this exclusion? What formats do we need to reach new audiences and keep them? How do we keep the readers engaged with the topics despite the fatigue? What is the right language to discuss the topics that have previously been off-limits, such as mental illness, gender-based violence, sexual identity?

From 5-8 October 2017, 150 European journalists, media managers, activists, and academics met to take part in our three-day conversation.
