Apply now: Climate Journalism Conference in Astana

Published on Feb 23, 2026

Organized by n-ost in partnership with MediaNet within the framework of the Communicating Climate in Central Asiaproject, the conference builds on several years of collaborative efforts to foster cross-border climate reporting and professional exchange in the region.

On April 21 n-ost will host the Central Asian Climate Journalism & Communication Conference, a pivotal gathering focused on strengthening climate journalism and communication across Central Asia and Europe.

Climate change continues to reshape Central Asia, intensifying water scarcity, accelerating glacier melt, increasing the frequency of extreme weather events, and placing additional pressure on vulnerable communities. At the same time, journalists and communicators face growing challenges: accessing reliable data, countering disinformation, and making complex climate topics relevant to local audiences.

The event will bring together climate journalists and communication professionals for:

  • A one-day conference on April 21, dedicated to sharing tools, formats, and best practices in climate reporting. Participants will present how they collect and verify data, collaborate across borders, and embed local stories into a global climate context.
  • Participation in the Regional Ecological Summit (April 22–24), offering broader engagement with policymakers, experts, and environmental stakeholders.

The conference welcomes two types of applicants:

  • Participants (open to applicants from Central Asia) who will attend both the conference and the Regional Ecological Summit.
  • Speakers (open to applicants from Central Asia and Europe) who will organize and lead workshops during the conference and participate in the summit.

Workshop proposals may include:

  • Practical sessions on investigative climate reporting
  • Cross-border collaboration strategies
  • Tools for climate data research and visualization
  • Storytelling formats that connect climate change with social and economic realities
  • Short capacity-building sessions focused on research, writing, and communication skills

Travel and accommodation costs for speakers may be covered by the organizers (shared accommodation is possible).

Applications must be submitted by March 5, 2026.

The Central Asian Climate Journalism & Communication Conference aims to create a dynamic platform for exchange, strengthen regional networks, and empower journalists and communicators to report on climate issues with greater depth, accuracy, and impact.
