Open Call: Workshop in Germany about Journalistic Approaches to Queer History

History Unit Launches Open Call for Workshop in Berlin, Weimar and Buchenwald on 14-20 October

What: educational and networking program

When: 14-20 October, 2024

Where: Berlin, Weimar and Buchenwald (Germany)

For whom: journalists and activists from Belarus, Germany, Poland and Ukraine

n-ost (Germany) together with Fundacja Autonomia (Poland) and Human Constanta (Belarus) are pleased to announce the start of the application process for our second joint event within the project “History Unit: Reframing Queer Narratives in Media”.

The program connects media professionals and queer activists who have journalistic experience. With this workshop, we want to research narratives of queer past with main focus on the NS-persecution of queers. We want to draw meaningful parallels between historical oppression of LGBTQ+ individuals and the present-day challenges faced by queer communities in the project countries.

This educational program includes:

  • a thematic tour to the memorial site of Buchenwald with insight in historic sources
  • tours of the exhibition, library and archive of the Schwules Museum Berlin
  • a visit to the editorial office of Siegessäule and L-Mag, key German print magazines for queer audiences
  • practical working phases with professional support
  • cultural events
  • networking

A highlight of the program are lectures and discussions with:

  • Joanna Ostrowska, a historian who researches the subject of forgotten victims of the Holocaust and queer history of WWII.
  • Kim Dresel from Arolsen Archives, world’s most comprehensive archive on the victims and survivors of National Socialism.
  • Yuliana Skibitska, an editor and journalist who worked in many Ukrainian media, including Babel and Zaborona, and with international publications Rest of World, PENopp and others.
  • Olga Bubich, an essayist, journalist and artist tackling the issues of personal, collective and collected memory about traumatic past events, censorship and misremembering enforced by repressive regimes.

All participants of the program will have the opportunity to apply for a follow up stipendium to create cross-border journalistic content. More information will be provided during the workshop.

Who can apply?

We want to address media professionals as well as queer activists with experience in content creation from the following countries: Poland, Belarus, Ukraine and Germany (regardless of the current place of residence). Unfortunately, we cannot assist with any visa procedures.
