History Unit Opens Applications for Workshop in Lublin and Przemyśl, Poland

What: educational and networking program

When: 22-28 April 2025

Where: Lublin and Przemyśl, Poland

For whom: journalists and activists from Belarus, Germany, Poland and Ukraine

n-ost (Germany) together with Human Constanta (Belarus) open applications for the third workshop within the project “History Unit: Reframing Queer Narratives in Media”.

History Unit connects media professionals and queer activists who have journalistic backgrounds. This workshop will examine queer experiences of displacement from the National Socialist era to the present day, with a particular focus on contemporary forced migration due to the war in Ukraine. Three years into Russia's full-scale invasion, we want to explore how occupation, war, and state persecution continue to shape queer displacement in Europe. The program includes:

  • guided tour of the Majdanek Memorial Site

  • lectures and discussions with researchers, journalists and activists featuring:
    • culturologist Olha Honchar with insights from the Territory of Terror Memorial Museum in Lviv and a workshop on political memory

    • historian Joanna Ostrowska on the Lublin-Majdanek concentration camp, Paragraph 175, and queer inmates' stories

    • human rights trainer Anna Redko examining the experiences of queer people in wartime Ukraine

  • practical working phases with professional support

  • city tours

  • cultural events

  • networking

All participants of the program will have the opportunity to apply for a follow up stipendium to create cross-border journalistic content. More information will be provided during the workshop.

Who can apply?

We want to address media professionals as well as queer activists with experience in content creation from the following countries: Ukraine, Poland, Germany and Belarus (regardless of the current place of residence). Unfortunately, we cannot assist with any visa procedures.

How to apply?

Please, complete the questionnaire by 9 March, 23:59 (CET time). The application should be in English, except for the motivational part, for which you can choose any project language (Belarusian, German, Polish, Ukrainian, English). The selected participants will be informed by 14 March.
